SnapChat Update: Cool New Feature, or Gateway for Ads?

October 4th, 2013  |  By Elizabeth O'Dowd

This morning when you rolled out of bed to send your usual good morning Snap, you might have noticed a change in the look of SnapChat. Not only is the app’s home screen and photo screen updated, it’s now a bit easier to tell the difference between sent and received messages. But that’s not all that’s changed; there was also a music video for a band called Smallpools. After the video was over there was an option to “Double tap to Listen,”  in blue which is a stray from the normal purple and pink color scheme.

Along with these ads, SnapChat has also introduced a new feature called SnapChat Stories. This update will allow you to build chains of shared content that can be viewed for 24 hours. Be careful when you do this because all of your friends can see the pictures or videos for 24 hours.

This new feature lets you create a timeline of images, and also opens the door to advertising. So far, SnapChat has been ad free, but with this new update, businesses could take advantage of the longer lasting snaps.

Is this update a good thing, or a bad thing? Let us know in the comments! Check out the PreApps blog for updates on all the latest tech buzz and new exclusive apps coming soon!
