Apple is hoping to break into the healthcare industry with the release of a new application, Healthbook, which will come pre installed on iOS8 phones. This new app is expected to monitor all aspects of health, fitness and workout information.
It would track and report steps, calories burned, distance walked, weight fluctuations and more, creating a challenge for popular fitness apps such as those made by Fitbit, Nike, Runkeeper and Withings. These will have to discover new ways to compete with this preinstalled multifunctional app.
Healthbook would take mobile fitness applications one-step further as it is reported to have the capability to track vital signs; more specifically a person’s blood pressure, hydration levels, heart rate, and potentially several other blood-related data points.
The software is programmed to also allow users to enter data about their medications so they could be reminded to take pills at scheduled times. This is likely to integrate with the existing iOS Reminders app.
Once iOS 8 is on the market, Healthbook will have an impact on the type of apps which are being released, specifically those with a focus on health and fitness. This new iPhone app can change the entire fitness sector of mobile app development.
