Flappy Bird Proves the Importance of Social Media

February 3rd, 2014  |  By Allison Saffiotti

Having gotten between 1 million and 5 million downloads on Android alone, Flappy Bird created by indie game developer from Hanoi, Vietnam, Nguyen Ha Dong, has everyone wondering what is it about this game that has made it so popular?

With three apps in the top 10 rankings now, everyone is curious to know how a game which has seemingly come out of nowhere has gotten so many viral hits.

As for the game, with a simple appearance and graphics that resemble super Mario brothers, Flappy bird is surprisingly one of the hardest games to date. And yet the gameplay involves nothing more than tapping your screen to keep a flying bird from running into green pipes.

In fact, it’s a game that’s descried to be “so irritatingly impossible, and yet somehow so addictive”, that it seems to have been created for the sole purpose of having users “share” with friends rather then to emphasize the gaming experience itself.

Approximately 300,000 users to date have rated Flappy Bird, many leaving long comments either criticizing, venting or suggesting new ways to make this game even more challenging. The #flappybird hashtag has become increasingly popular on twitter, trending daily with users buzzing about the challenge of this game.

App development has become increasingly important, as the need for a strong social media presence is key for launching a successful app. All of the buzz from this game has changed the way developers want to release and promote apps.

There is now an emphasis placed on app press release creation and implementing successful social media strategy that will gain user attention and ultimately make it to the top charts.
