Ads to Invade Instagram Starting Next Year

After purchasing Instagram in April 2012, Facebook intends to make revenue out of the picture sharing app, by introducing ads to the blissfully free service. It was announced yesterday, that ads will begin to be incorporated into Instagram next year, although it is unclear how they intend to do so.


Facebook already makes millions of dollars by selling ad space and allowing people to pay to promote their business but it’s hard to say how the ads will take form on instagram. Since Facebook is heavily text-based, it’s easier to place an ad. Instagram, however is all about image and is purely smartphone based. Space on smartphone screens is a precious commodity and by taking up that valued space with ads, people aren’t going to have much patience for it.


Hopefully Instagram will take their time and implement a hashtag based ad system. It seems to work already with people who are fans of certain companies and who are happy to hashtag a brand name. It’s sink or swim for Instagram, but one thing is clear, people hate ads on their smartphones, but it’s a necessary evil; without ads there’s no product.
